Inspiration

  • Navan

The Celtic vocal group Navan decribe themselves as "friends who have come together to share our love of Celtic music among ourselves, and with others. We sing in the languages of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man. We have a special feeling for those beautifully worded songs and poems whose tunes have been lost—there are so many."

  • Sweet Honey in The Rock

The African-America vocalist group Sweet Honey in The Rock was founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973 (with Mie, Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson) at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company. This internationally renowned a cappella ensemble, has been a vital and innovative presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C., and in communities of conscience around the world.

  • Eric Whitacre

The American composer Eric Whitacre is one of the most popular and performed composers of our time, a distinguished conductor, broadcaster and public speaker.

  • Sir John Tavener

The English composer John Tavener first came to public attention in 1968 with the premiere of his oratorio The Whale at the inaugural concert of the London Sinfonietta. The Beatles subsequently recorded this on their Apple label.

  • Arvo Pärt

Arvo Pärt was born in Paide, Estonia, a small town near Tallinn, the country's capital, on 11 September 1935. In 1944, Estonia saw the occupation of the Soviet Union, which would last for over 50 years, and would have a profound effect on his life and music.

  • Tony Backhouse

These words from Roi Colbert, New Zealand Listener, present a pretty good summation of the Gospel Songleader Tony Backhouse.

Backhouse is Australasia's premier arranger and teacher of a cappella gospel. Tim Finn says he is quite simply the finest vocal arranger he knows and Sam Neill reckons he's a national treasure.
